Leicester City manager Russell Martin standing pitch-side

EFL League One: Leicester on a long road, says Heskey, but changing managers won’t help

Former Leicester City star Emile Heskey didn’t give current manager Russell Martin a ringing endorsement when asked if he was the right man to lead the club long-term – but does feel that getting rid of the ex-Southampton manager would be a mistake.

The Foxes have dropped into EFL League One this season, and are struggling in that division too, having won just four of 11 games to lie 13th in the table.

They are 10 points behind league leaders Huddersfield Town, who have played 12 games, and Heskey feels Martin may need to adjust his playing style.

Results not the best

During an exclusive sitdown interview with BestBettingSites, Heskey said: “Russell Martin’s had a tough time because he wants to play a certain way, and the reality is it looks great, but the results aren’t giving us what we need.

“I do believe it was supposed to be consolidation in League One based on the transfer difficulties and where the club was at.

“A lot of people looked at it and said we’ve got to be pushing for promotion straight away.

“We didn’t have the squad for that – a lot of them were young lads coming out of the Under-21s or returning from their first or second loans.

Leicester on a long road

“To mount an assault on promotion with that is tough, so I think it’s more about consolidation.

“Leicester are on the long road. Chopping and changing managers isn’t going to help them get back to where they want to be.”

Leicester City face Wigan Athletic in League One on Tuesday night, and Heskey gave his thoughts on the game, saying: “I would love to say Leicester, but I’ve got to go with a draw.

“I’ve been less than impressed with Leicester to be honest, whereas Wigan have been doing okay during a tough time stabilizing their club.”
