The midweek Championship fixtures promise plenty of action, with several high-profile sides facing important tests as the race for promotion and the battle to avoid relegation continue to take shape.
Middlesbrough are among the teams whose performances are currently reflecting their ambitions, while West Ham, despite the quality in their squad, find themselves outside the top six, with Nuno Espirito Santo coming under immense pressure.
There is also a particularly intriguing clash between West Brom and Southampton. Both sides are in excellent form and within touching distance of the top spot, making their meeting one of the standout fixtures of Gameweek 14.
Elsewhere, Wrexham and Cardiff find themselves closer to the relegation zone than they would have hoped at this stage of the campaign.
With promotion ambitions, managerial pressure and relegation concerns all coming into play, there is plenty riding on this round of Championship fixtures.
West Brom vs Southampton – Tuesday, November 3, 20:00
Two of the Championship’s most in-form teams will go head-to-head in a midweek clash as West Bromwich Albion host Southampton at The Hawthorns on Tuesday night.
Both teams are enjoying excellent runs of form and have made strong cases for themselves as promotion contenders, with neither far off the top of the table.
The stakes are high, as a win offers either side the opportunity to move into second place, depending on the results of other matches involving second-placed Swansea City and third-placed Wolves.
Form guide
West Brom have collected 10 points from their last four matches, recording three wins and a draw.
This impressive run has pushed the Baggies firmly into the promotion picture. They currently sit fourth in the table, just four points behind leaders Middlesbrough and two behind second-placed Swansea City.
Although West Brom have scored just 19 goals in 13 matches, the lowest tally among the current top-nine sides, their defensive performances have more than made up for it.
They have conceded only 14 goals this season, making them the joint second-best defensive team in England’s 2nd division heading into this fixture.
Southampton, meanwhile, have been impressive at both ends of the pitch. They have scored 28 goals in their opening 13 matches while conceding just 13, the fewest in the division.
The Saints have also collected 13 points from their last five matches, keeping three clean sheets, scoring nine goals and conceding just twice.
Their recent performances underline their credentials as serious promotion contenders.
Team news
West Brom’s star playmaker Jimmy-Jay Morgan is a major doubt after picking up an injury during their emphatic 3-1 win over West Ham at the weekend, a game in which he scored once and set up another goal.
Aune Heggebø is in contention to replace Morgan in West Brom’s starting XI.
Nolan Galves, Mikey Johnston and Toby Collyer remain sidelined for the home side.
Cyle Larin is a major doubt for Southampton, but otherwise, the visitors have a clean bill of health.
Flynn Downes returned to Southampton’s matchday squad during their 4-1 win over QPR at the weekend. The 27-year-old midfielder is now in contention to start against West Brom.
Match odds
West Brom are slight favourites, priced at 6/4 to secure all three points. Southampton are available at 9/5 for an away win, while the draw is priced at 27/10.
Suggested bets
Both teams to score; West Brom 2-2 Southampton.
Wrexham vs Middlesbrough – Wednesday, November 4, 19:45
Wrexham will once again be looking to make the most of their home advantage as they welcome current Championship leaders Middlesbrough in a crucial fixture on Wednesday night.
Backed by Hollywood ownership, Wrexham have ambitious plans of reaching the Premier League.
However, their performances so far this season have done little to justify those lofty goals.
Form guide
With just three wins from their opening 13 matches, Wrexham find themselves closer to the relegation zone than the top six, which was their ambition at the start of the season.
Their current 18th-place position makes for grim reading, with the club just five points clear of the bottom three and a significant nine points behind sixth-placed Birmingham City.
The biggest problem for Wrexham is the lack of goals.
They have scored just 15 times in 13 matches, averaging a little over one goal per game. The Reds also lost their last two matches without scoring in either.
Manager Phil Parkinson is no doubt under immense pressure, given the club’s ambitions and the team’s poor run of form.
Middlesbrough, by contrast, are operating on an entirely different level. Not only are they sitting at the top of the Championship table, but the Boro are also scoring freely.
Eight goals in their last two matches have taken their tally to 30 in 13 games, making them the second-highest scorers in the Championship, behind only West Ham.
Adding to their confidence is an impressive 11-game unbeaten run, the longest in the Championship.
Boro’s last league defeat came against Blackburn Rovers on August 22, and they will be looking to extend that run when they travel to Wales on Wednesday night.
Team news:
Josh Windass remains sidelined with an ankle ligament injury sustained during Wrexham’s 1-1 draw against Derby County on October 10, 2026.
Forward Nathan Broadhead is also expected to remain out until December 5 after suffering a serious thigh strain in training.
Liberato Cacace is another absentee, with no confirmed return date following a recurring calf injury.
On a more positive note, long-term absentee Max Cleworth returned to the squad for the first time since September 8 during Wrexham’s 1-0 defeat against Sheffield United at the weekend.
George Thomason is also back after nearly two months on the sidelines following a thigh injury.
Middlesbrough are sweating over the fitness of Championship top scorer Will Lankshear.
The 21-year-old Englishman continued his impressive scoring run with a brace against Charlton at the weekend but had to be substituted due to cramp.
However, the striker is expected to be fit to feature against Wrexham.
Alfie Jones remains unavailable for Middlesbrough with a calf problem, while Rokas Pukštas faces a longer spell on the sidelines as he continues his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury.
If Lankshear is fit to start, expect manager Kim Hellberg to stick with the same starting XI he named against Charlton at the weekend.
Match odds
The odds favour Middlesbrough, with Boro priced at 78/100 to secure all three points. A Wrexham win is available at 10/3, while the draw is priced at 3/1.
Suggested bet
Middlesbrough to win 2-0.
Cardiff City vs West Ham United – Wednesday, November 4, 19:45
Nuno Espírito Santo will take his struggling West Ham side to Wales to face Cardiff City on Wednesday night.
The Hammers boast the most expensive squad in the Championship this season, and their primary objective is to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.
Given the quality and investment in their squad, anything less than automatic promotion would be considered a failure.
Even a top-six finish, which would force them to navigate the play-offs and secure promotion through the Wembley final, would fall short of expectations.
Form guide
Pressure is mounting on Nuno at West Ham. The former Nottingham Forest and Tottenham manager needs to get much more out of a squad that possesses quality all over the pitch.
But the task got even harder for Nuno as his team’s nine-game unbeaten run in the league came to an end with a 3-2 home defeat against Southampton, followed by another disheartening 3-1 loss at home to West Brom.
The biggest concern for Nuno is not simply that his side lost back-to-back games, but that both defeats came against direct promotion rivals who are also chasing automatic promotion.
The results have dealt a significant blow to West Ham’s hopes of securing a top-two finish as Hammers have now slipped to eighth in the table, with a six-point gap now separating them from current leaders Middlesbrough.
On a more positive note, West Ham remain the Championship’s most prolific attacking side, having scored 33 goals in their first 13 matches.
Cardiff, on the other hand, find themselves in a relatively comfortable position despite their current 17th-place standing.
Having secured promotion to the Championship this summer, their primary objective is to avoid the immediate drop.
Sitting five points clear of the bottom three, Bluebirds have made a decent start towards achieving that goal.
Their recent form also offers encouragement.
Despite suffering a 3-0 defeat against Wolves at the weekend, Cardiff had collected seven points from the last four games, which is a respectable return for a team looking to avoid relegation.
In terms of their overall performances, Cardiff have scored an average of 1.46 goals per game while conceding 1.5 per match across their opening 13 fixtures.
Team news
Gabriel Osho serves the final match of his three-game suspension and will be available for the next fixture.
Cardiff’s 3-0 defeat against Wolves at the weekend came at an additional cost, with centre-back Will Fish suffering a hamstring injury.
The 23-year-old joins Callum Chambers, Dylan Lawlor and Rubin Colwill on the sidelines.
Meanwhile, Krystian Bielik, Alex Robertson and Isaak Davies are all racing against time to prove their fitness for this match.
Nuno has confirmed that first-choice centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos has returned to training following the knee injury he suffered during the 2-3 defeat against Southampton.
The 28-year-old also missed West Ham’s subsequent fixture against West Brom but is now in contention to feature against Cardiff.
Kyle Walker-Peters, meanwhile, picked up a knock at the weekend and remains a major doubt for the visitors. Joël Veltman is likely to step in if Walker-Peters fails to recover in time.
Match odds
The odds favour West Ham, with the Hammers priced at 21/20 to take all three points. A Cardiff City win is available at 12/5, while the draw is priced at 3/1.
Suggested bets
Cardiff to score but West Ham to win 3-1.
